Inspections ongoing

Quebec’s Ministry of Transportation has reduced the maximum speed drivers can reach while crossing the Île aux Tourtes Bridge to 70 km/h from 100 km/h.

The speed reduction was put in place so the government agency can carry out what it calls urgent work on the aging span that was built in the mid 1960s.

Sections of the bridge, which have been closed in the past, have now been reconfigured in the eastbound direction since Dec. 7 so that further inspections can be completed. The speed reduction was also put into place to allow drivers to better navigate the narrower lanes.

Meanwhile, the regional public transportation agency providing train and bus services to Vaudreuil-Soulanges residents is encouraging people to consider using public transportation options while the bridge’s needs are being evaluated.

CIT La Presqu’Île spokesperson Louise Lapointe says the agency can increase the number of buses made available in order to compensate for delays that may occur due to congestion on highways 20 and 40, as well as on the local road network.
