School safety lesson driven home

While students are the ones hitting the books for another school year, it was parents who were educated this week at Léopold-Carrière Elementary School in Les Coteaux. Sûreté du Québec officers joined municipal officials at the school on Sept. 7 during an awareness campaign aimed at important safety reminders. Flyers distributed to parents drove home obeying mandatory laws including respecting 30 km/hr speed limits in all school zones, yielding to school buses’ flashing lights, and respecting bus unloading zones. MRC Vaudreuil-Soulanges police say they have increase their presence in school zones to coincide with the start of the academic year.

Long weekend results

Provincial police were kept busy during the recent Labour Day weekend, which turned deadly for some. According to SQ Sgt. Ingrid Asselin, provincial police in the Montérégie issued 291 speeding tickets from Sept. 2 – 5 and arrested 21 drivers incapacitated by drugs or alcohol. Another 14 motorists were ticketed for not wearing seat belts, while 13 people were caught driving while using a cellular device. An additional 215 infractions were issued for various offenses. Across the province 6,900 tickets were issued in total. Asselin said there were two fatal accidents in the province, though none in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges MRC. Last year SQ police reported five deadly crashes during the Labour Day weekend.
