Investigators seeking witnesses

A man is dead following a shooting Sunday night in Île-Perrot involving Sûreté du Québec police officers. The Quebec Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes, BEI, has taken over the investigation into the fatal shooting. Several BEI investigators were on the scene until 3:30 p.m. Monday afternoon. According to BEI, SQ police responded to a call at around 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 2 about a disturbed man in the area of Grand Blvd. and 2nd Ave. who was allegedly threatening to commit suicide. Police were able to trace a cell phone to the address. Upon arriving at the house police say they encountered a man armed with a knife who charged them with the weapon. Shots were fired and the man later died of his injuries. Martin Bonnin Charron, a BEI spokesperson, said his information was that more than one SQ officer was involved in the shooting. Standard procedure included isolating the officers, who were required to fill out incident reports. “They would meet with investigators within 24-hours,” he said. The officers will be able to return to work once their supervisors feel they are ready.

 BEI

Quebec’s bureau of independent investigations will take over when a citizen is seriously injured or dies as a result of police action, or while being detained by police. According to the BEI website, the SQ police chief on duty Sunday night was immediately required to report the incident to Quebec’s public security minister. The minister in turn will determine if an independent investigation is warranted. If an investigation is opened by BEI, a backup police force is designated to assist. Montreal Police have been named the designated backup in the Ile-Perrot shooting. Anyone who may have witnessed the event, or who has any information, is asked to contact the BEI on its website at www.bei.gouv.qc.ca.
