Hudson theatre opening WWII tribute

Registered veterans granted free admission

An award-winning tribute to World War II veterans will open on Sept. 16 at the Hudson Village Theatre. And all veterans are welcome to attend the show free of charge.

Jake’s Gift, written and performed by West Island native Julia Mackey and directed by Dirk Van Stralen, will play at the HVT from Sept. 16 – 20. Juno Productions has brought the multi-award winning play to more than 200 communities across Canada since 2007. The run has included international stops in the U.S., the United Kingdom, as well as stops in Normandy, France for the 70th anniversary of D-Day.

And a grant from Veterans Canada to HVT means registered veterans are welcome to attend any performance of Jake’s Gift free of charge.

The show, a one hour, one act, one-woman show, tells the story of Jake, a Canadian WWII veteran who reluctantly returns to Normandy for the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings. While revisiting Juno Beach, Jake meets Isabelle, a precocious 10-year-old who innocently challenges the soldier to confront some long-ignored ghosts.

Called a powerful tribute to veterans, as well as a surprisingly funny drama, the play was inspired by Mackey’s own journey to Normandy in 2004.

Jake’s Gift will run at the Hudson Village Theatre,  28 Wharf Rd., with matinee and evening shows from Sept. 16-20. For tickets or information call the box office at 450 458-5361, or go to  www.villagetheatre.ca.
