Fifth annual effort raises $145,000 and counting

More than 1,000 walkers of all ages who donned white event T-shirts Sunday morning didn’t let grey skies and some drizzle dampen their sprits when the fifth annual Walk for the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Palliative Care Residence Foundation got underway
The May 1 event that kicked off at Maison Valois Park in Vaudreuil-Dorion was timed to coincide with National Hospice Palliative Care Week. The event brought in more than $145,000 for the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Palliative Care Foundation, which needs the funds to offer free palliative care services in the region. The home’s foundation undertakes the monumental task of raising more than $1.4 million each year. The Hudson based residence has been operating since 2012. Vaudreuil-Dorion mayor Guy Pilon was in good spirits as he helped lead the start of the walk that saw fellow mayors from Terrasse-Vaudreuil, Les Coteaux, Rigaud, Pointe Fortune, and more, participate. More than100 volunteers were on hand at the park, as well as along the walk routes that included 3, 5 and 7 km courses. The residence admits as many as 175 people, and their families, each year to live their final days in dignity while in a home-like setting. Up next for the VSPCR will be an annual “poker run” golf tournament, taking place on May 30 at the Whitlock Golf Club in Hudson.
