Drug arrest leads to larger haul

A drug trafficking arrest made last week in a local bar led police to a larger drug stash when the suspect’s home was searched. Sûreté du Québec police arrested Patrick Russell, 45, of Saint-Zotique on April 29 after he was allegedly found to be in possession of marijuana for the purposes of trafficking. According to SQ Sgt. Bruno Beaulieu, when officers obtained a search warrant for the suspect’s home they seized close to 150 grammes of hashish (cannabis resin), 130 grammes of cocaine, as well as more than $850 CDN cash. The suspect went before a judge at the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield Criminal Courthouse on May 3. He faces charges including breach of conditions and possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking. He was detained.

Tobacco smuggling

SQ police and RCMP officers from the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield detachment arrested a 30-year-old Boisbriand man on May 3 in connection with a tobacco smuggling network allegedly operating in the Beauharnois region. Police seized more than 70 bags of bulk tobacco, as well as a 2004 Ford F350 vehicle. The suspect will face charges under a 2001 Tobacco Tax Amendment Act.
