Hudson’s ‘Antiques Roadshow’ not to be missed
Ever wondered what that old painting that’s been in the family for generations is worth? Or a book that may or may not be rare, along with an odd keepsake that’s been collecting dust? An annual appraisal fundraiser held by the Greenwoood Centre for Living History can help answer those questions.
Treasures in the Attic, taking place Sept. 17 in Hudson, is the region’s very own version of the popular Antiques Roadshow TV program. Each year Greenwood organizers bring in expert appraisers in a variety of fields for one day. For a $5 appraisal fee, anyone who’s ever questioned the value of a possible treasure can find out. The event helps the living museum that dates to the mid 1700s remain open for public tours of the house, gardens and grounds.
Unique event
Treasures in the Attic, held each year at St. James’ Church Hall, 642 Main Rd., gathers a notable list of experts who have donated their time to Greenwood. From furniture to paintings, jewellery to antique silver, the expert appraisers will be on hand to satisfy people’s curiosity about their treasures. A gold buyer will also be present. This year, two new categories have been added to the collectables mix: comic books appraised by Ashley Cotter-Cairns, and vinyl record valuations by Robert Carr. Returning evaluators will include Kevin Colgan (antiques), Wilfred de Freitas and Susan Ravdin (books), Victor Isganaitus (antiques), and Roberto Menard (nostalgia items). Hudson resident Maureen Decelles, a gold buyer and certified gemologist, who is always busy during the day, will be on-hand for appraisals and to buy unwanted gold.
Mile high apple pie
A not-to-be-missed part of the day is a special tea room set up each year to offer warm scones, homemade apple pies and beverages. The famous mile high apple pies baked by a small army of volunteers have become a local tradition. The pies are usually sold out long before the last treasure is evaluated. Meanwhile, a Vintage Shop will offer items for sale which have been donated to Greenwood. All antiques, china, paintings, furniture and other goods sold will go toward the event’s bottom line. Treasures in the Attic will be held from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 17. To book an appraisal time call 450 458-5396. For more information go to: www.greenwood-centre-hudson.org.
