Twenty countries represented
Pincourt will roll out the welcome mat and celebrate its diverse cultural makeup Saturday when the third annual Pincourt Intercultural Festival gets underway.
Community members representing a total of twenty countries including, Senegal, Colombia, Ghana, Mali, Argentina, Congo, Romania, Hungary, Philippines, Mexico, Togo and China, will participate in the Sept. 10 event in an effort to help others learn about their homelands. The celebration, running from 2 p.m.- 6 p.m. at the Desjardins Kiosk at Olympique Park., will give visitors the chance to sample foods from the various countries. In addition, cultural handcrafts, accessories and jewellery will be sold. South African and Moroccan music by Gotta Lago Project will kick off at 2:30 p.m., while The Classics, a folk, classic rock and pop group, will perform at 4:30 p.m. According to Célia Corriveau, head of the town’s Social and Cultural Development Division, the aim of the festival is to give residents the chance to learn about the variouis cultures, traditions and countries from which their neighbours may come. The Sept. 10 event will be cancelled in the event of rain. The Pincourt Intercultural Committee was created in 2013 to organize events promoting positive relationships and connections between citizens from different cultural backgrounds. Residents from diverse groups, and those with a strong interest in intercultural relations, are encouraged to join.
